Design of Residential Space

Project
Introduction

Without flashy opulence, the abode features Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetics. Instead of pursuing sophistication and perfection, the rustic paint regains a sense of peace and serenity. However, the wood structures and woodworks exude Japanese style in the details. The aged rattan, solid wood, and pebbledash transport people back in time and create a living space of Japanese simplicity. Under the light, one can appreciate the Japanese philosophy that emphasizes purity and simplicity as well as bringing tranquility of the mind and relief.
The entrance serves as a space that filters out the chaos and stabilizes the mind. The curves on the flooring create a mud room at the entrance, which is a great way to welcome the houseowners home and get away from life's hustle and bustle. Warm solid wood chairs, rattan doors, and wood screens slow down the pace of life to help the body and mind unwind. The hand-painted pebbledash TV wall exudes charm and primitive posh, presenting a rough aesthetic. On the surrounding and lower cabinets, wood grains and rattan in dark and light tones prevent the space from looking dull and boring.
The structural beams on the ceiling create a sense of visual oppression and obstruction. While being wrapped with wood veneer, they offset the heaviness of the volume, and at the same time extend the Japanese style vertically, achieving a sense of harmony in the whole room. The ambient lighting fixtures are embedded in the recessed TV wall. The slightly diffused lights add an instant warmth.
To eliminate the narrow feeling of the original layout, the partition wall is moved backward to enlarge and open up the dining room. A simple round dining table maintains the essence of Japanese style. The translucent shoji door can hide the chaos in the kitchen while implementing the Japanese style. In the study room, layered textures and the rough mottled surfaces embody the spirit of wabi-sabi, the acceptance of imperfection and flaw, as well as the homeowner's peaceful lifestyle.
